QR Code Link to This Post If you've seen Jane Austen movies, then you've seen English Country Dancing. English Country dances are the courtly, polite society and community dances of England from 1650 - mid 1800s. Our repertoire includes dances popular in the 1600s all the way up to dances devised this year. Each dance has its own tune. Some are elegant and sedate, some playful, some jolly and bouncy.

At these classes you will learn how to do English dance figures and each dance is taught every time, with every couple walking through the dance. Then the music is put on and you are dancing, and the dance leader will prompt the figures, until everyone is comfortable with the dance.

Dancers take a new partner for each dance of the evening, and join a "set" of couples, a mens' line" facing a womens' line. Each couple dances a series of figures (turns, circles, etc.) with other couples in the set. There's minimal footwork, no fancy or difficult steps. There's no ballroom hold, hence, no stepping on feet. One of the pleasures of this kind of dancing is that you are part of a team and interact with everyone in the set. Another is that you don't need to bring a partner.

Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Wear shoes that won't stick on a carpet - for ladies, low heel, smooth leather sole flats, etc., and for men, a shoe with a smooth, leather sole works well. Ballet slippers and jazz shoes are best. Socks and bare feet work too. Shoes must have clean soles suitable to wear inside the house; that is, shoes that are NOT worn outside. No rubber slippers or strapped sandals. They are unsafe. We're fragrance free.

We try to dance one weekday evening each week in Kailua. When we dance depends on when we can get 4 or more dancers together. There is no charge. This is an on-going activity, so there is no end date.
