Hi, my name is Huei-Mei but you can call me May. I have played the flute since I was 10, and speak English (and Chinese!) fluently. I completed my Doctorate of Music-Flute Performance at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus and my Masters in Music-Flute Performance at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music.
I've been teaching flute for over 10 years. I structure my lessons, so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of flute skills. In general, some lesson topics include: 1. Why an excellent tone matters 2. How to accurately interpret music 3. How to improve technique (e.g. fingering, vibrato, tonguing, ) 4. Why your breathing may be wrong, and tools for improvement
I encourage my students to set their own goals and help them develop a passion for music. In addition, emphasis will be placed on performing the flute most naturally and using the least amount of effort, with a special attention to the basic principles of the 'Alexander Technique,' which professional musicians use to perform. Students will also have a tool to improve their breath control available during their lessons. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
