Hi There. Interested in guitar lessons? Here is some information on lessons with me:
Full-Time Guitar Teacher
Working Musician
BA in Music
Specialist in Adult and Teen Students
-Beginners to Old Pros Welcome!
The main thing you should know about how I teach is that there is NO SET CURRICULUM. A lot of teachers seem to teach most or all their students the same thing(s). My guess is it's because they don't know what else to do, for instance teachers who insist on starting players of every skill level and genre interest with scales and notation. I have extensive experience with all sorts of players, and every one's different. Before centralizing to my own studio, I taught at several Bay Area music schools (including Blue Bear), as well as giving private lessons at music shops and schools in the Boston MA area, Florida, and Arizona. I can certainly provide references as desired. Whether we're talking about delving deep into scales and theory or just working on your "chops," whatever we do will be tailored to your needs as a guitarist.
-I'm quite used to being a "guitar psychologist" too, after all these years. I try to help self-taught players with technique, only if the "bad habit" is getting in the way of their playing or playing potential. There are some things that require perfect technique, things we can play "sloppy," and everything in between.
-I can also help with practice habits, drastically improving the pace at which you finish new material.
-It is my opinion that most players get frustrated from working on things in the wrong order, for instance always starting at the beginning of a piece. These issues are huge time-suckers + and an easy fix! I can confidently say that I can help you progress more rapidly, and you can learn the same amount of material in considerably less time.
-Muscle memory is complicated. Learning any piece of music "1 hard part at a time" is central to my teaching style, as opposed to playing the whole thing over and over, hoping you improve.
NO KNOWLEDGE OF THEORY REQUIRED! We can play Punk or Modal Jazz or James Brown. (or all of the above) We can work pentatonic solos and never run out of ideas, or we can expand your scale knowledge vastly. I myself have gigged and recorded with a diverse range of bands: Classic/Modern Rock, Jazz, Singer/Songwriter, countless Blues bands, a 12-piece Pfunk Cover Band, an Astral Metal "Orchestral," Instrumental Hip-Hop Group, African Highlife Projects. My listening interests are all over the place too. C
My hourly rate is $40. Weekday, weeknight, and weekend lessons are available My studio is in a safe area, close to Bart with plenty of street parking.
*I am now offering Skype/online lessons, which are getting very popular w/ folks in San Jose, Marin, etc.
No flaky flaky!!
I'm not flaky, not personally or professionally. Many music teachers are REALLY FLAKY from what I hear. I will not flake around on you, rest assured, no matter what previous-teacher trauma you have experienced. I really am grateful for your business and try to make myself available to my students, for instance returning emails and voicemails within the same business day. We aim to please.
