Redwood Decks And Cedar Decks Both redwood and cedar are western softwood species that are treasured for their rich crimson color and natural beauty. In addition, redwood and cedar tannins and oils make them naturally resistant to rot, decay, and voracious insects, so they don't need to be pumped full of chemicals. They're stable and resistant to warping and splitting when compared to other lumbers. The both make great decking material. Redwood tends to be the Bay Area's predominant decking material due to its reasonable price tag, low maintenance and cool surface in the summer heat. Tropical Hardwood Decks Tropical hardwood decks share several common characteristics. They're all very dense, hard, heavy, durable, and naturally resistant to rot and insects. It's difficult to give accurate pricing information on tropical hardwood decks without first determining which exact species you want since there are so many species available from all over the world. Generally speaking, however, tropical hardwood decks are the most expensive real-wood decking option, costing slightly more than redwood and cedar. No real-wood decking is 100 percent maintenance-free, but tropical hardwoods come closest.

Composite Decks (Wood-alternative Decks) Long on life span and short on fuss, composite decks never splinter, rot, or need staining. Composite deck lumber comes from the manufacturer as a finished product. There is no need to stain, sand, or paint the material. Composite materials usually cost more than lumber, but their long life and low-maintenance requirements could make them more economical in the long run. Many composite decks are often made partially out of recycled plastics and waste wood, such as Trex Decking, which makes them an environmentally friendly, efficient use of resources.
