Seeking Hiking and Backpacking Buddies (North RaleighDurham) hide this posting unhide

QR Code Link to This Post I am hoping to meet other individuals, specifically in the Raleigh or Durham area, who are as passionate about wilderness hiking and camping as I am. Both experienced and novice outdoorsmen and -women of any age are welcome to respond. My only requirement is that you must own (or be willing to purchase) your own gear if necessary.

I am 6'2" and 46 years old. I am not overly health conscious or extremely athletic. In fact, I am slightly overweight by my standards and not in the "peak of health" like I used to be. In my lifetime, I have backpacked all over the East Coast: thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Pennsylvania in 2006 and again in 2015 from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire, the Florida Trail from the Everglades to Tallahassee in early 2012, a 280-mile circuit of the Shenandoah Valley via the AT, C and O Canal Towpath, and Tuscarora Trail in 2014 and a 285-mile circuit of Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley in 2009.

I learned how to hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire as a kid and have even climbed Mt. Washington three times. For a number of recent summers, I have been a counselor at a seven-week residential boys camp where I led trips and taught camping skills. I required my campers to learn Leave No Trace ethics and I also follow them to the best of my ability when I camp myself. I earned my S.O.L.O. Wilderness First Responder and Backcountry Survival Instructor certifications through the Nantahala Outdoor Center in the foothills of North Carolina's Smoky Mountains in the spring of 2013, but, unfortunately, it has now expired.

I am single, drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes sometimes, educated, centrist to liberal in my politics, and spiritual in my own way but absolutely not into Bible-thumpers. I do not use drugs but I am OK if you want to smoke a little green around the campfire by yourself. I have been a private middle school Latin teacher and a public law library office administrator.

If you are curious, contact me so perhaps we can chat over e-mail to see if we "click" and then arrange to meet for a beer to begin planning some overnight adventures in places like the Uwharrie or some regular day hikes at.
