I have researched these items on the net, however We haul hundreds of loads that get weighed every time to ensure our safety and that we do not exceed DOT weight limits. And over the years the above weights are correct.
Soil, especially topsoil, is a valuable commodity. It is bought and sold by volume rather than by weight. The standard units of volume are the cubic yard and the cubic foot. Builders may refer to a cubic yard as a "yard of soil."
Vegetable gardens require a minimum depth of 10 to 12 inches of topsoil. One cubic yard of topsoil is enough to create a vegetable patch measuring 27 to 33 square feet( THATS A SPOT OF LESS THAN 6 FEET EACH WAY). It is also enough soil to support a lawn measuring 81 square feet.

Convert all of your measurements into feet. Use decimals for your inches. For example, 4 inches would be .33 feet. Divide your inches by 12 to get your decimals.

Multiply length x width x thickness to find the volume or cubic footage of the area.

Calculate your cubic yardage by dividing your cubic feet by 27. There are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard, and dividing by 27 will give you your cubic yardage.
HERE IS A EASY EXAMPLE
YOUR DRIVEWAY IS 8 FT WIDE AND 100 FT LONG AND YOU WANT TO COVER IT WITH 4 INCHES OF CRUSH N RUN ( 4 INCHES IS RECOMMENDED )
8 X 100 X .33 / 27 WOULD BE JUST UNDER 10 YARDS = 9.77 .

KEEP IN MIND, WHEN MEASURING FOR FILL DIRT, YOU MAY NEED AS MUCH AS 2 TIMES THE CALCULATION BASED ON.
